“An Informal Forum to Break the Silence”

The Mozambique National Commission for UNESCO organized a 4-day workshop exploring youth artwork and issues of HIV/AIDS. 77 boys and girls aged 15 to 18 years old attended the workshop. Also in attendance were teachers from schools in the Chimoio region, and a Representative from the Mozambique Provisional Directorate of Education.

A general overview was given on HIV/AIDS, highlighting the seriousness of the problem in the community, and the need for advocacy and awareness. Arts-based activities were used to engage youth in discussion and creation of visual artwork on HIV/AIDS. The end result was the creation of a community mural.

A round table was also held on how sport could play an important role in the struggle against HIV/AIDS. Sport was highlighted as a unifying factor that brings thousands of people together, and is very engaging for young people. After the round table volleyball and football games were held in an atmosphere of friendship.
